Talk about deep cleansing. Dr. Bronner’s soap, a mainstay in health-food stores, was the brainchild of a Jewish engineer and holistic philosopher who fled Germany for America, was committed to a mental hospital in Chicago and escaped to California, where the credo of cleanliness and interstellar love he espoused on his soap bottles was embraced by the hippie generation. But there was a dark side to this soap opera, as we learn from the son who was rejected for looking too Jewish, yet truly embodies the philosophy of unconditional love. This stylish, surprising documentary screens with the organic-farming short “Fridays on the Farm” as part of Webster’s Thursday Night Docs series. (JW)

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox
Capsule by Jonathan Rosenbaum
From the Chicago Reader
If you’ve ever wondered about the backstory behind all the fine print on containers of E.H. Bronner’s peppermint soap, Sara Lamm’s 2006 documentary tells you everything you’d want to know and then some. And the story being told is certainly a singular one. Bronner, a German Jewish immigrant and onetime mental patient, abandoned his children to produce and sell his soap and spread his ideas about humanitarianism. Today his son Ralph qualifies as one of his most ardent disciples. For better and for worse, this is a movie that raises almost as many questions as it answers. 88 min. (JR) Ralph Bronner will attend the Sunday screening.

David Bronner President of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps shows how natural soaps test positive for the date rape drug GHB using police field kits while detergent based fake soaps always test negative.
